How can we free America from Oil dependence?

It seems as though America depends a lot on the middle east and other foreign sources for oil. Which alternative energy solutions would provide viable sources of fuel for our future? Wind / Solar / Hydro / combination? Why can't we figure out better ways to travel than using gasoline? This is America - let's brainstorm... freedom is inherently dependent on independence. Meaning - less things from foreign sources, more fuels from local sources...
